KK's 1st Surgery

Like I mentioned before in these posts, KK has horrible bloody noses and after a referral to the ENT, it was recommended that he have a cauterization done to the very large blood vessels.  Wednesday August 14th was the day it was to take place.  My dad and Mr H. took the day off so that they could be with him too.  Have I mentioned before how lucky I am to have great men in my life!?  Well, let me digress for a moment.  I am super grateful for the men in my life and the example they set for my son.  My hope is that he too, will one day be as great or greater than these men.  So the 4 of us headed to the local Children's hospital.  KK's surgery started at 9am, but we needed to be there 2 hours beforehand.  The waiting rooms were super small and could only hold 2 visitors, my dad stayed in the main waiting room while Mr H. and I could stay with KK.  At one time, I switched out with my dad so that Mr H. and him could give KK a Priesthood Blessing before the procedure.

We had talked to KK last night and explained what was going to happen (we did not mention an IV), that he was going to be given some medication to make him go to sleep but that he'll think he just closed his eyes for a second.  KK was excited about having medicine that would make him fall asleep and was eager to try it out.  BUT, me, on the other hand, I was super nervous and anxious.  I don't think I would have been so nervous if I were not in the medical field.  Let me digress again, once when I was observing a surgery, the patient in the room next to us was an 18 year old male who was getting his tonsils out (Routine, right!?  Small surgery right!? No problem, wrong!).  He went into cardiac arrest because of an adverse reaction to the anesthesia.  The doctors ended up opening his chest and defibrillating his heart.  Long story short, he made it, but I DO KNOW that there is a possibility of things going very wrong and that's why I was so nervous for KK.  I prayed for the doctors and nurses that everything would go smoothly for KK's surgery.

After the blessing, my dad came back out so that I could go back into the room with KK.  He had 2 nurses and they asked me the general questions they needed to, allergic to anything, past surgeries, born premature, etc?  They also asked if he had any loose teeth, which I thought was a little odd, but after thinking about it, it made complete sense...they didn't want them falling out during the surgery.  They took note of the "comfort items" KK wanted to bring with him...Monkey Chow and Dolphi, which are pictured below.

The PICU nurse who will be taking care of KK right after the surgery came in and explained to us that she will be with him and taking care of him until he is stable enough to come back to the room, which would be about 20 mins after the completion of the procedure.  When she was finished the anesthesiologist came in and explained things to KK and to Mr H. and I.  I asked about the IV, and she told me that they do it after he is "sleeping" so there is no anxiety/stress over getting that inserted when he is awake.  I thought that was a genius idea!  After meeting with her, the doctor came by and was very brief with us.  I had some questions for him such as how was the procedure done, liquid nitrogen and the cauterization tool is how he would perform it.

After we had met with everyone, KK was prescribed liquid Versed, which is used for anxiety and can make a person sleepy.  It only took about 10 mins for the effect to take place.  KK was saying he felt dizzy and kept moving around, he also ended up with hiccups.  He looked like a 6 year old drunk.  We did get a video, but it's on Mr H's phone.  Then, finally it was "go time" and he was wheeled away.  I thought it would be a good time to use the restroom, but the restroom was closed for cleaning so I just talked with my dad for a while until the restroom was open again...about 15 mins went by and it still wasn't open but I thought I should go back to KK's room to wait for the doctor, who was going to come by when he was finished with KK.  By the time I got back to the room, the doctor had already come by and talked with Mr H.  Oops, I didn't want to miss it, but Mr H. did a great job asking about recovery and if he needed to be careful during gym or when he could go back to soccer practice.  The doctor also told him that they removed his lower right lateral incisor and they kept it for him in a specimen cup to take home

I still needed to use the bathroom and we told the nurses that we would be out in the waiting room if they needed to find us.  I was able to finally use the bathroom and after about 15 mins the nurses came out to get us.  KK was already in the room.  He was OUT!  The nurses told me that they needed to make sure that he would wake up, but that wasn't going to happen.

It reminded me of this picture of when I was brought back to my recovery room after general anesthesia.  I don't remember this photo being taken or anything else that happened the day I had KK.

The anesthesiologist brought KK a white cherry slushy but he was so tired that he had a hard time drinking it and would suck it into his mouth but would forget to swallow.  He was sooo out of it.  Poor baby.  After a while we were given the "go ahead" to go home.  We were given a wheel chair so he could be transported that way.  The nurses were apprehensive of me lifting him because I'm so pregnant, but I do it at home too...a 55 pound boy is no big deal I suppose.  Mr H. had left to go get the SUV ready and pulled up to the building.

We dropped off my dad at home and Mr H. and I got something to eat at McDonalds.  KK was still out solid.  So we went home and Mr H. carried him inside and laid him on the couch where he just slept and drooled all over the pillow!  After we ate lunch Mr H. needed to go to work and a little while after he left KK woke up and I fed him some small crackers and juice.  He was so confused as to how he got home.  I told him his tooth was missing and this is his picture showing how happy he was to have another tooth gone.

The picture is kind of awkward, I know, but he was still VERY MUCH out of it.  We started watching a movie, but soon after it started he said he needed to throw up.  He was very nauseated.  So I just took care of him the best I could.  Cold wash cloth, sips of sprite, stroking his arm, and singing songs.  Eventually he fell asleep and I just kept everything quiet, I even laid down on the other end of the couch and fell asleep with him.  Until JM called and wanted to see how KK was doing, she said hat she had something for him...I asked her if she could wait an hour while he slept and settled his tummy, but she was adamant and came over.  Bringing him a sundae.  JEM and another kid she watches was with her and they were NOT quiet and ended up waking KK, but KK was glad to see JEM.

I think that (fingers crossed) IF KK ever needed another surgery, I don't think I will be nearly as anxious as this one.  I know how KK reacts to anesthesia and what I need to expect when he comes back, nausea and vomiting and being very sleepy.  I'm glad everything went well and that so far since the surgery, he's only had 1 very small (in comparison to before) bloody nose.  He has a follow up on the 29th.

Capturing Memories

"In America, there are two classes of travel: First class, and with children." -- Robert Benchley

I saw this quote and laughed because it's true.  Last week KK and I went to Virginia.  We left June 18th and didn't come back until the 25th.  The GPS says it's about a 9 hour drive, we made it there in 11.  Traveling with a child, by myself, proved to be more difficult than I thought.  I left at 5:30am and KK stayed awake the WHOLE time...after 2 hours in the car we were playing the, "when are we there yet," game.  It was rough, but we made it.

Once there, we settled down for a bit and went with Grandma Lisa to Zumba.  KK had been stuck in the car all day and needed to use some energy.  He LOVED Zumba and wants to come with me next time I go.  After Zumba we took a shower, ate tacos, and went to bed.

Tuesday June 19
Today we woke up late and Grandma Lisa made KK eggs for breakfast and I was happily surprised when KK brought a plate of eggs to me (I was still in bed).  It made me smile to have eggs made for me...it was a great way to start the morning.   We took our time getting ready for the day.  Once ready, we went to where Lisa works.  She wanted to show off KK, she figured since she talks about him all of the time she should probably bring him by for her co-wrokers to meet.  The last time they've seen him, he was 5 months old!  KK got lots of hugs and became VERY shy...the best part of his day?  All of the suckers!  Lisa works at a bank and everyone gave him suckers.  Matter-of-fact, I still have some of the suckers in my purse!  Once the running around was done, we came home.  KK and Lisa played outside.  I brought his bike on this trip and he showed Grandma how he can ride a 2-wheeler!  I, went and took a 4 hour nap!  4 HOURS!  I was tired.  We ate left-overs and planned our day for tomorrow and then went to bed

Wednesday June 20
Today we went to Washington DC. We met Pop pop (Ed) at his work first so that he could park the car in the garage. He needed to get back to work so Lisa, KK, and I took the metro to The National Zoo. KK LOVED the metro! His favorite part was standing and holding onto the bar while the train was moving.
The longest escalator I've ever seen

The train was coming!
The Zoo was a lot of fun. We saw a ton of animals. We were able to hear a lion roar, which was awesome! KK loved all of the animals but was excited to see the pandas. Once we got to the pandas, though, he didn't seems as excited. It was so hot and humid. We kept ourselves hydrated and the mist stations helped. Lisa's soda exploded all over me...that was unexpected lol. We were able to see all sorts of different animals.

He loves that thing

Did I mention that it was HOT!?

See the ape in the glass. It was so cute
We got some relief from the heat inside
My handsome boy!
I love him!
He did not want to get near this!
After the zoo, we went to The Museum of Natural History. Again, KK was able to ride the Metro:

At the museum we saw a bunch of animals that no longer are living. KK loved the Wooly Mammoth. When we were in the insect exhibit he had a bloody nose out of nowhere. So we took care of that and proceeded to the rest of the areas.

We walked all over and I saw this couple with very bright hair and decided to take their picture.

I liked looking at the hope diamond but KK didn't want anything to do with it. So all I got was a simple picture.

Also in the basement of the museum there are birds native to the DC area. KK saw this owl and said, "Hedwig!" He really is my son. I had to get his picture next to the "Harry Potter" owl.
After the museum we decided to go to Chipotle.  KK loved the quesadilla and had 2!  He was a hungry boy.  After dinner we went home and relaxed because the next two days were going to be filled with more great adventures.

Thursday June 21
Today we woke up and no one was home. Lisa and KK went to purchase sand buckets. Ed went for a run. Have I mentioned that he runs...A LOT? He just recently finished a 50 mile marathon a couple weeks ago. Once everyone was home we packed up in the car to go to Virginia Beach. I had packed everything of KK's and mine the night before. He was very excited. I was very tired because I had a hard time falling alseep the night before. I had stayed up watching Harry Potter and reading Wicked. Once we were packed up we headed off for Virginia Beach.  These are some goofy photos we took while driving.

Eventually KK fell asleep and missed the tunnel that we drove through that goes underneath the water!  Once we reached our destination, we checked into the hotel then got ready to go to the beach.  KK was still tired but still very very excited!  This picture pretty much sums up how KK felt about the ocean.  He didn't want to leave!  We had to explain to him that we would be back the next day.

Once back at the hotel we all took a shower and pretty much brought the beach back with us. I haf so much sand in crevices it was awful. But after the shower I felt MUCH better. Wendy's was our stop for dinner. The we went back to the hotel to ger some rest for the next day.
Pose for me how much you like the beach

Friday June 22
Today we ate breakfast in the lobby of the hotel.  KK only wanted the yogurt and hard boiled eggs (white part only).  We packed up, checked out, and went back to the beach.  I went shopping for a while and bought sunglasses, a bag, boogie board, couple of shirts, and hats.  Once I came back from shopping it was lunch time for KK.  I ate McDonalds and had to wait to go back in the water.  He didn't want to wait after he saw that boogie board.  I wish that I had gotten more pictures of him on the boogie board, but honestly we were playing in the water and having so much fun that I didn't even think about pictures.  While Grandma Lisa and KK were having fun in the water I was sitting in our spots and in the corner of my eye I thought I saw lightening, but it was so bright and sunny out that I thought it was in my head until I heard the thunder and I saw KK just jump out of that water and come running.  He was out of there and getting everything ready to pack up.  He HATES storms.  "Ok, it's time to pack up...let's go to the car...the storm is coming, let's go"  He was ready to go, the only problem was that Ed decided to go running and we had no way of reaching him and we had so much STUFF (including my shopping) with us that it would make carrying diffucult.  But the lifeguards told us that they were closing the beach so Lisa and I had to try carrying everything, which we were able to manage.  The storm had come in fast because the wind was starting to blow and we just figured that Ed would realize that we were at the car, so while we waited we packed up so once he got there we could just hit the road.  I helped KK change into clean clothes and I tried getting all the sand I could off of him.  KK was a little better once we got to the car but he was still worried about Pop pop.  The ipad helped to distract him until Ed showed up and we were able to leave before the storm really hit.  We made it to the highway and the storm came, which meant that we had to go slower and therefore it was going to take longer in the car to reach the house.  KK was kind of getting restless and I let him peel my sunburned skin.
Once he was done peeling my skin he was all tuckered out.  He didn't have much of a head rest so I kind of made one out of my ball of yarn.  He slept almost the entire way back...which, of course, made falling asleep difficult.

Saturday June 23
This is my message from my facebook status, which summed up the day: Home Monday...it's been fun but I'm excited to be home too. Today we ate at IHOP (since we don't have one close by) and saw Madagascar 3. Caleb also played a little bit of baseball with Grandma and Pop Pop. Highlight of the day...when we went to 7-11 to get a freezy and Caleb totally drop his and it splashed EVERYWHERE...floor, cupboard doors, counter, everywhere....I wanted to die!

Sunday June 24
Woke up around 5am to start the trip home.  I packed everything up in the car last night and all I needed to do was fill up the cooler, get KK buckled in, and make sure I didn't forget anything.  KK was still very tired, which was to my advantage.  I set him up with pillows on all sides of him and he slept 2 1/2 hours.  I was able to make some great time.  Going home was MUCH better than leaving home.  We only took a couple breaks to stretch our legs and eat some snacks.  KK and I had some good conversations...and we saw 'polar bear cows' (all white cows).  We traveled through Virginia, Maryland, Wes Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.  We stopped in Columbus and got a hotel on our way home because Monday I volunteered to help out at the Bishop's Storehouse.  The hotel had a huge king's size bed.  I was so excited bcause KK is THE BIGGEST bed-hog and let's just say that getting a good night's sleep with him in the bed is nearly impossible because he moves around so much...he also kicks off the covers.  So when I saw the king's size bed I was stoked.  KK wanted to have dinner at Golden Corral.  It was pretty good...I loved the sweet rolls.  We came home and swam in the pool for a while, took a shower, and got ready for bed.  KK fell asleep fast buct I couldn't get to sleep until about 2am!  That was 22 hours awake!  Plus I needed to be at the storehouse at 7!  So eventually I did fall asleep.

Monday June 25
Luckily the hotel had a hot breakfast for us.  We had eggs and bagels we washed it down with cranberry juice.  We worked hard at the storehouse labeling the orders and even shopping for the orders.  Once 9am came around there were tons of people there to help.  KK was getting restless and by 12 he was running around the store and the manager asked me if I could control him more so I decided it was time for us to leave.  There were only 11 more orders left.  We got home...can I just tell you how GOOD it felt to be home!?  We got home just in time for Mr H.'s lunch break.  He came home to see us and he didn't want to go back to work, unfortunatley he did (and he had night classes too so we didn't see him again until 9am).  KK and I spent most of the day at the pool and it was wonderful.

Grandma's Visit

This last weekend KK's Grandma came and visited him. Well, she had some business to do here in town, but basically she enjoyed a weekend with KK. One thing that they did was the lighting of the Christmas tree and the parade...well, sort of. KK told her he was hungry and it would probably be a while longer before everything was over so they could go out to eat so they decided to leave to eat at Stake and Shake. But before they left they were able to take some pictures.

Posing in front of the Christmas tree

Those are really big treats!

Santa's Reindeer, KK was so excited!

Family Tradition

When I was at 6th grade camp my parents wrote me a letter each day telling me how much they loved me and how much they were thinking of me. They also wrapped little gifts such as rice krispie treats, a Mariah Carey CD, and a coupon for a date, just me and them (which was a treat, having grown up in a house with six kids). I loved those letters. I still have the "date" one saved because I was never able to go on that date [Side Note - I've been thinking of showing it to my parents and telling them I want to redeem it now! lol]. I had to be picked up early from camp because I had thrown up twice the night before we left. But I LOVED those letter, it made me feel that even though I wasn't at home that my family still missed me and loved me too. Those letters meant so much to me. It's a family tradition to write each other letters when they go on a trip. We leave the letter in their suitcase so when they open their suitcase, there is the letter!

When I went on my honeymoon I wrote KK letters to let him know that I was still thinking of him even though I couldn't call or talk to him. My honeymoon was the longest I had ever gone without talking or being with him. So these letters were for him to know that I still loved him even though I couldn't be with him. As I was cleaning our laundry room I came across the letters I wrote to KK on my honeymoon. I want to always remember them.

Monday:
I hope you had fun today. Did you play lots? And eat good food? Mom likes it when you eat good foods. Have you been playing with Gabe nicely? You BOTH need to mind your manners and try to be good for Mimi and Papa or there will be punishment. On a happier note, I miss you so much and can't wait to give you a BIG FAT hug and kiss when I see you next. If you feel sad because Mom is gone just read 3 Nephi 12:4. I love you very much. I can't wait to see you again!

Love Mom

P.S. I will be home in 3 days!

[RR and KK woke up early to go to SCC w/ Erin to get RR's transcripts! After that, we went home then RR go a call from her new job saying she had to get her fingerprints! Before we left, she bought me a cheeseburger happy meal w/ an Iron Man II toy! Everybody thought RR was my mommy and RR even played along because she bought McDonald's for G and AA :/ But that's okay. Then we went to WSU to turn in RR's transcripts! I was so tired but I was a very good boy for EVERYBODY :) She got me a Wendy's frosty. Then we went home and RR played songs on the guitar about Dora, and Wow Wow Wubzy, and about me! RR and I are also sleeping on the couches downstairs because I had a little accident in RR's bed :( But it's okay! I got to cuddle w/ RR all night on the couch even though she made me a place to sleep. I just love her so much! I also loved playing with her ipod and laptop. I got lots of compliments on my clothes today by people too! I love you mommy and I can't wait for you to be home!

Love, KK & RR

P.S. Erin took KK to the bathroom @ SCC and when he went out he said he had to go to the bathroom again because there was still a drop that had to come out! It made Erin's day. Now Tyler is over and we are going to go to bed!]

Tuesday:
Have you brushed your teeth today? You better not forget to do that, we don't want your teeth to fall off. Have you been able to go to that Activity Park yet? I can't wait to give you lots of kisses when I get back. And guess what? I will bring you back something special but only if you are really good. Have you been good? I really hope so. I miss you so much. I can't wait to see you.

Love, Mom

P.S. I will be home in 2 days

[KK had an awesome day today. We got up early to drive RR to Walker Toyota to see about working after we showed her where it was, KK and Papa went to McDonalds for breakfast. We are in the playground and there was a boy there KK did not like. The boy left with his grandma. We ate and played, then Shack gave KK cookies. KK found a paper on the ground and gave it to Shack. Shack was happy. We played with the remote control car and then with James' bicycle pump. We did not get to the water park, but watched TV off and on. KK watered plants in back. KK and Shel lmade pizza. Yummy. KK had some strawberry milk with his pizza. Tyler came over. Papa told a story of a family with small boys that were preparing for a summer of travel with their race car, KK brushed his teeth and they sparkled. Papa layed down on the couch as KK played with his cars and told Papa short story of kids that wanted to race, but their Mom said, "No" and they said please and so she said, "Yes". They raced and then had chocolate ice cream. A few minutes later KK fell right to sleep next to his Papa. I sure love him - He misses his Mom, but actually he is doing ok. We miss you

*Shack is a WWII vet who works at McDonalds for bowling money because his wife wont's give him any! He's the coolest old guy ever!]

Wednesday:
What did you do today? Anything fun? I really hope you listen to your grandparents. I miss you tons - I wish that I could call you but I can't. But I will be home soon. I have a special surprise for you. And what if when we come home we'll go out to dinner or something. What do you think? Sound like a good idea? Maybe start thinking of a place we can go to eat, Okay!? I love you

Love, Mom

P.S. I will be home in 1 day

[Since RR is working, AA and G watched me today. I had lots of fun watching TV shows all by myself because I watched MY TV shows. Later in the day I helped Papa make JW a box so we can send him parts or his bike. I was playing with my scooter and G was riding his bike. When RR got home we had spaghetti, it was so yummy, I ate it all up! I had an accident again last night :/ Papa took me to the waterpark and we stayed till they shut the water off. It was nice and warm today. After the water park RR made me a bath. It was nice and warm too! Now we are getting ready for bed. I can't wait to see you and Mr H.! I love you guys!

Love, RR and KK]

Thursday:
guess what? Tomorrow I will be home. So go to sleep then when you wake up I will be home. So go nigh-night. I can't wait to hold and kiss and suddle with you. I have missed you tons. KK's California Trip

KK went on a trip to California with his grandma. He was gone for about 8 days and I missed him dearly! I was grateful for the time to get things done, but I was sad to not feel his hugs and kisses in the morning. I know that he had a great time, although I did get a little freaked out when grandma called and said they were in a car accident the day they got there! But KK was fine, it was a fender bender, but still, it was nerve wracking for me, especially after his car accident earlier this year.

I'm really not sure everything that he did in California but I know that he had a lot of fun meeting and playing with X's side of the family. He went to Reno, Nevada and met other family members. He has a 2nd cousin who is a month older than him and he has a little pony tail and KK keeps mentioning it every now and then on how he should cut that off. Which I thought was really funny that KK would NOT like to have one and he thinks that his cousin's needs to be cut off.

KK had a great time and he has told me a couple stories of the things he experienced. I think that KK would love to take this trip again next year (before school starts!?) I am grateful for the relationship that KK has with his grandma and I am grateful for the relationship that I have with her. She calls every week and asks how I am doing and to get an update on KK. She lives in Virginia but has been looking for housing here in Ohio just in case a job may open up for her to move here. I am lucky to have her. She loves KK so much and I am grateful.

Mother's Day Eve

Yesterday KK's grandmother, L, from Virginia came to visit for a couple of days. KK was so excited to see her, he hasn't seen her since his birthday. She spoils him so much and takes him to do lots of fun stuff. He wanted to make a list of everything they were to do while she was here some of the items include: Going to the Movies, Air Force Museum, Bounce U, Bowling, Golfing, and some other things. I called L last night to ask how KK was doing and to say goodnight and she said she couldn't help it, but she spent a ton of money on him at Wal-Mart. I laughed...KK was so busy playing with his new toys that he was too preoccupied to say goodnight.

Today was kind of a laid back day. I was able to sleep in, make breakfast for everyone, and watch a little bit of ER. Mr H's mom sent me a mother's day card that was very very sweet. I love his family. His sisters, who are both pregnant, are both great to talk to. I just feel bad that I didn't send them a card for mother's day. It was seriously not at the forefront of my mind...we've had too many things going on. But I will call them tomorrow and wish them a Happy Mother's Day.

I also worked today. Nannie is doing well, she is in Congestive Heart Failure though and she has a sore on her heel. She loves it when I eat with her...even if I'm not hungry, she just likes it when I sit with her. She's sad and wants to go back home to West Virginia but she can't survive on her own. I felt bad when she was on the verge of tears saying, "I want to go home. I just want go home." Soon after, Mr H. and G stopped by and dropped off a fountain drink for me. I fed them some of the chicken that was made. I had been craving donuts all day. I LOVE pastries, donuts, cakes, etc. And so when Mr H. and G left I thought they were going home but they actually went to Bill's donuts and brought them back to me and we all ate a donut. Nannie was too full to eat one but she enjoyed talking to the boys.

Once I was home from work I started making my mother's day gifts. They were all homemade. I would love to give more detail but I have to wait until everyone receives them.

All-in-all, today was a good day we weren't tried as hard as other days...at least with anything new. We're just trying to make sense and piece together everything else which had been going on previously. I'm hoping that the days continue to get better, little by little..."By small and simple things are great things brought to pass" Alma 37:6

Isn't he the cutest thing ever!?

Signing off, Goodnight!

Nannie

My grandparents passed away when I was younger...in fact my sister, AA has never met any of her biological grandmother's. She was less than a year when one grandfather died and the other when she was 9. AA and I are 9 years apart. But for all intents and purposes, my grandparents died very young and I WISH that they were still alive to see my children.

I landed an unbelievable job in October with a family who needs help occasionally watching his mother. The husband and wife are in their 80's and his mother...she's 106 years old! That's right folks 106! In exchange for a decrease in rent I give them 40 hours a month to watch Nannie. Nannie is a little spit-fire. She's 100% with it. She wears thongs because they feel good and is frustrated that she isn't dead yet. She always tells me the same stories about her days as a teacher in West Virginia. She used to ride to school on a horse. She lived on a farm and her dad was the first ones in town to buy a Model T car. When they would drive it and it would start picking up speed her dad would yell, "Whoa Whoa!" before realizing that he needed to put pressure on the brake pad, like he was driving a stage of horses. She asks me everytime I'm there if I've ever met anyone as old as her and she tells me about the guys who call her. I help her organize the letters she recieves. We have a good time.

It's a good job and the whole family is great. They have kind of been like my adoptive grandparents. They really look out for us and I'm glad that they have made such great neighbors.
